Paolo La Rosa was born in Milan, Italy, in 1971. He studied piano and he took is degree in Organ and Composition and in Choral Music and Choir Direction with Maestros Franco Castelli and Nunzio Scibilia at Conservatorio “Luca Marenzio” in Brescia.
He then attended a course in Harpsichord, Baroque Organ and Early Music with Maestros Laura Alvini, Lorenzo Ghielmi and Diego Fratelli at “Scuola Civica di Musica” in Milan. He also took is degree in Composition with Maestro Umberto Rotondi at the Conservatorio “Giuseppe Verdi” in Milan in 2002. In 2007 he took is Second degree in Composition with Maestro Mario Garuti, at the Conservatorio “G. Verdi”, where the Orchestra of “Pomeriggi Musicali” from Milano played in first performance his “Callifer” for Orchestra.
He studied also Organ Improvisation in Lyon, for two years (France) with Maestro Franck Vaudray. He was selected in 1997 and 1998 to attend ‘Rencontres de Maitres’, organ classes with Maestros Michel Bouvard and Jan Willem Jansen, at CEMS, Centre for High Musical Studies, in Toulouse, France. He has also pursued his studies in the music of Louis Vierne further on the prestigious Cavaille’ Coll organ at St Sernin, Toulouse.
He attended numerous Organ Interpretation courses held by Maestros of international fame in France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, for example D. Oberdorfer, H. Vogel, M. C. Alain, A. Marcon, L. F. Tagliavini, L. Rogg, A. Galan, L. Mallié, O. Latry, P. Van Dijk, S. Landale and W. Zerer. Moreover, he attended several Organ Improvisation courses with maestros W. Seifen, P. Planyavsky, K. Ostrowski, F. Blanc, T.Flury, P. Pincemaille, J. Essl, ect.
He is also composer and choir director. He has composed numerous pieces for mixed voices and children’s choirs and a collection of motets for voice and organ, edited by Armelin Musica Padova. In the 2004-2006 and 2008 years, attended the European Seminar ‘Choir Composing – Today’, hosted by FENIARCO and EUROPA CANTAT in Aosta, where he had the opportunity to pen “Gorgée”, a 4 mixed voices piece for 8 soloists and choir. This piece stood out so much that it was chosen for the final concert and was then aired by the national Bulgarian radio during the programme ‘Europe is singing’. In 2008 his composition “La gallinella bianca” for children’s choir and piano is edited by the FENIARCO collection ‘Giro giro canto 3’.
His composition “Gorgée” was a “compulsory piece” at the 45th International Choral Competition “C.A. Seghizzi 2006” of Gorizia (www.seghizzi.it), which he won the 3th International Competition of Choral Composition “C. A. Seghizzi” 2005. In the 2007 he was in the Jury of the 46th International Choral Competition “Seghizzi” of Gorizia. His music is often perfomed in Choral Festival and Choral Competitions.
Paolo La Rosa is at the moment Organist and Music Director of the Sanctuary of S.Michele and S. Rita in Milan. He play, every year, several organ concerts also in organ improvisation. He also had played the organ and harpsichord for various orchestras, as well as being a soloist. With the “G. Donizzetti” Symphony Orchestra (Bergamo), he performed J. S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor. He had collaborating with the Catholic University Symphony Orchestra of Milan, which he toured Thailand with.
In 2006 he recorded a CD in improvisation: “Two organ mass in improvisation”, a symphonic musical trip on the melodies of the Christmas ambrosians carols.
WINNING COMPETITION
- In 1996/7 he was at TIM – International Tournament of Music sponsored by AGIMUS, Rome which was held at Lovanio, Belgium. There he received an honorary Diploma for the highest score in the semi-finals.
- He achieved second place at the 1st National Competition Domenico Zipoli for Liturgical Organ held in Prato, Tuscany, in 2000, under the wings of the Italian Association, Santa Cecilia.
- In 2002, he’s achieved first place at the 1st National Competition of Composition “Music and multimedia” with a composition for strings quartet.
- In 2004 he achieved first place at the National Competition of Organ in Acqui Terme (AL).
- In 2006 he won the 3th International Competition of Choral Composition “C. A. Seghizzi” 2005 with publication of “Gorgée” by the Editor Ut Orpheus, Bologna.
- In 2008 he was selected for the publication of a female choral piece “Ballo padano” by the “II choral composition price Bruno Bettinelli” in Milan (I).
- in 2008, he’s achieved a third place with honorable mention at National Composition Competition “Missa Pueri Cantores” by Italian Federation of Pueri Cantores, now is available the publication.
